What "-iums" and Metals Health?

I was shocked about the effects of the "-iums" and metals on good health.

And, I simply have to find out more about them. So, here is a summary of my findings which I would like to share with you.

First, the -iums: Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, and Selenium.

* The -iums *

#1. Calcium

- Source: Milk, cheese, leafy green vegetables, almond. - Functions: Teeth and bones, blood clotting, endurance. - Deficiency: Porous bones, heart palpitations, cramps. - Destroyers: Stress, lack of exercise, lack of magnesium.

#2. Magnesium

- Source: Wheat germ, bran, soybeans, honey, spinach, seafood. - Functions: Bones, arteries, heart, blood sugar regulation. - Deficiency: Depression, nervousness, mental confusion. - Destroyers: Unknown.

#3. Potassium

- Source: Bananas, apricots, figs, parsley, raisins, seafood. - Functions: Regular heartbeat, kidney, nerve function. - Deficiency: General weakness, acne, constipation, insomnia. - Destroyers: Sugar, alcohol, caffeine, stress, most laxatives.

#4. Selenium

- Source: Eggs, milk, mushrooms, tuna, broccoli, onions, wheat. - Functions: Preserves tissue elasticity, neutralizes carcinogens. - Deficiency: Premature aging, dandruff, possibly cancer and tumors.
- Destroyers: Unknown.

And now, we have the metals: Zinc, Copper, and Chromium.

* The Metals *

#1. Zinc

- Source: Seafood, liver, mushrooms, nuts, leafy greens. - Functions: Wound, burn healing; prostate health. - Deficiency: Fatigue, hair loss, sterility, reduced libido. - Destroyers: Alcohol, excessive calcium, phosphorous deficiency.

#2. Copper

- Source: Raisins, organ meats, blackstrap molasses, whole grains. - Functions: Body healing, color of hair and skin, bone formation. - Deficiency: Weakness, anemia, poor respiration, retarded growth. - Destroyers: Excessive zinc.

#3. Chromium

- Source: Clams, corn oil, whole grains, brewer's yeast. - Functions: Cholesterol and protein, blood circulation. - Deficiency: Depressed growth rate, hypoglycemia, arteriosclerosis.
- Destroyers: Unknown.

The shocking thing that I discovered was that over-dosages will negate the effect of the metals or vitamins. For instance, excessive Calcium destroys Zinc, and excessive Zinc destroys Copper.

* The Fact *

I was amazed at the bottles upon bottles of vitamins and minerals sold at the dietary supplement shops.

Each bottle was touting the benefits of a particular vitamin or mineral as if that is all that a person need for the day. Add to it, the different dosages and brands, and the consumers are simply at a loss as to which is the best.

Frankly, if you ask me, I would go for an all in one. At least, that way, I'm sure that I won't get an over-dosage of a particular vitamin or mineral, and I have almost everything that is needed for good health. Heck, it is probably cheaper too. :)
