Why The Need For Moisturizers?
Author:
Mildred Donato Villapando
They say maturity comes with age. Not so when it comes to concerns of the skin. You don’t even have to be biologically “old” to experience wrinkled, dry skin.
Dry skin means inadequate or lost moisture which is characterized by flaking and itching. It may be due to the weather like cold air and low humidity, hormonal changes or medications for older women. For young ladies, premature skin aging may be due to one’s diet, too much exposure to the sun, and even over-animated facial expressions.
Research shows that cyclical, significant weight loss and gain (also known as “yo-yo” dieting), stretches the skin. This causes it to lose its elasticity, making it more vulnerable to wrinkling and sagging. Sunlight on the other hand, exposes the skin to the possibility of skin cancer due to the ultra-violet rays that penetrate beneath the skin’s surface.
Experts also say that skin has a “memory,” which means that if it is repeatedly folded by way of muscle contractions, permanent static lines will eventually form. So if you scowl most of the time, the more tension it leaves in your facial muscles.
When the skin is dry, it needs water or moisture —not oil— to rejuvenate it. Most of the time, cleansing and toning can be a little rough on the skin and even if you use a product that suits your skin type, it will still leave it a little dried out. You’ll eventually need a protective barrier against premature aging and wrinkles. This is where moisturizers come in.
Moisturizers prevent water loss by layering an oily substance over the skin to keep water in or by attracting water to the outer skin layer from the inner skin layer. In short, moisturizers either act like a dam (occlusive moisturizers i.e. petrolatum, mineral oil, lanolin) that trap water in the skin, and the other acts like a humidifier (humectant moisturizers like glycerin, propylene glycol, proteins) which pull water out of the air.
What’s the best moisturizer?
There are a lot of products in the market today claiming to make your skin look younger. But nobody can say which product is the best for moisturizing your skin, although some are certainly better than others. A good moisturizer will hydrate without greasiness, while leaving your skin smooth, soft and optimally-protected from sun damage.
An example of a good moisturizer is a non-comedogenic, non-greasy and non-irritating formulation that contains a superior system of emollients and humectants to bind moisture to the skin.
Moisturizers are your best defense against unsightly laugh lines and wrinkles that may make you look older than who you really are.

| The Importance of taking an Antioxidant Supplement |
|
Antioxidants are an important supplement to anyone's diet because they prevent the bodily damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are the most common cause of tissue damage and free radicals have been linked to every known disease by more than 6000 scientific studies.
Free radicals are molecules that are over-reactive because they are unbalanced electronically. In an attempt to become balanced they rob electrons from the molecules that make up the cells in your body, damaging or destroying them. In addition, free radicals damage cell structure and reduce the cell's ability to function.
Controllable amounts of free radicals are formed during normal cellular functions, but excess free radicals can result from drugs, air pollution, tobacco smoke, pesticides, herbicides, chemicals in our food and water, allergic reactions, emotional upsets, excessive exercise, and even an excess of certain dietary substances such as fats.
Fortunately, antioxidants protect against free... |
